Noah Pettibon’s Sara Cassey Windflower Octet (Live Steamed and In-Person)
No cover charge, all ages
About the Sara Cassey Windflower Octet:
“Local baritone saxophonist, composer/arranger, and historian Noah Pettibon leads a brand-new eight-piece band, the "Windflower Octet", in their debut performance celebrating the music of the late Detroit composer Sara Cassey. This is the first project presenting Cassey’s full known body of work.
“Sara Cassey's short life and career is woefully under-documented. She came up in the fertile 1940s and '50s Detroit jazz scene and migrated to New York City in the late 1950s with many of her peers and friends including Pepper Adams, Tommy Flanagan, and others. Fortunately, the beauty of her pensive, colorful style of music can be enjoyed thanks for recordings by her peers from Detroit such as Hank and Elvin Jones, and in New York such as Johnny Griffin, Billy Taylor, Clark Terry and many others.
“Being presented are brand new octet arrangements of Cassey's music by Noah Pettibon and Henry Fernstrom with a special contribution by New York City baritone saxophonist and historian Frank Basile.
“Please come and enjoy this first performance by top Seattle and Tacoma area artists Sidney Hauser on 1st reed/alto saxophone, Henry Fernstrom 2nd reed/tenor saxophone, Noah Pettibon 3rd reed/baritone saxophone, William Ward on 1st brass/trumpet, Beserat Tafesse 2nd brass/trombone, Eric Verlinde on piano, Fredy-Andrés Pesante Castro on bass, and Paul Hirschl on drums.”
